Description
Muzzle flash of a howitzer in a Salute Battery accompanies the National Symphony Orchestra during Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture during the PBS performance "A Capitol Fourth". This is a technical shot as the shutter must close as the hot gas exists the gun barrel - just some thousandths of a second late and a big cloud of smoke is all one gets.
This is a late 1990's photo. QUITE IMPORTANTLTY, the spot from which this was shot is now closed off on July 4th. The Reflecting Pool at the Capitol now has a security fence around it while PBS uses the Grant Memorial on the East side for performance purposes. I used to try my hand at this shot on many July 4ths - but the closure of the area since 9/11 no longer permits...
A Watercolor Conversion of this photograph is available in my "Watercolor Treatments" Gallery here at FAA - thank you for viewing!
